They probably measure it by hand. (They count every turn a record makes for 1 minute.)

I just played some vinyl records with steel needles and under the microscope they are just needle shavings and sometimes scratches on the bottom of the grooves witch comes from poorly balanced tonearm.

Since they are using a dull tin needle, you could barley see anything under a microscope.

Some devices are not officially supported by the TWRP team. Fortunately, the code is open source, so some developers on XDA created versions of TWRP that support some of the officially unsupported devices.

In the video description I explain the adjustments I made to the gramophone to get it to successfully play a vinyl record. I suggest watching the whole video as you will see me wind the machine as it is playing which causes the rpm to get a little erratic since the motor is not designed to maintain 33rpm. Also towards the very end of the song the spring motor thumps which causes the needle to skip on the record. This is heard very clearly.

A way to make it less laggy is lowering the resolution how you do that is when your streaming it on ur computer it will show a bar that you can slide and you can lower the resolution so it will be less laggy

It's not fully tearing the groove up but it's wearing it out so....

@@digidoridvideos3672 ive got a gramaphone cabinet. I tried a couple different things to make it play new records. Nothing performed as well as yours. Cheers.

Probably varies by machine. Props for trying though.

@@digidoridvideos3672 the speed was easy to match, the weight on the needle was the tricky part. I was able to make it work, but I liked haveing it original, so I restored it.

I didn't do anything special. The built in speed control knob lets it go low enough. I think I just got lucky with the type of motor in this machine. Hopefully I'll be able to get the speed more consistent.

They're regular steel soft tone needles. I dulled the needle slightly first by playing an old 78 before switching to the vinyl.

I've thought about this. However this issue is that you still need to drive a vacuum pump to initially lower the pressure and to maintain the vacuum to some degree. I believe this is the system that steam turbines use in many cases. I'll look more into it because it would increase the efficiency of the engine...

Thanks! It will get ear-hurting loud when playing old big band 78s from the 1940s. Vinyl records are alot quieter since the grooves are smaller but I still measured around 70dB from the edge of the horn. It's alot louder than you would expect! The spring motors on these machines are designed to spin at around 78 rpm so they have trouble maintaining such a low speed of 33rpm. Although, many other antique windup gramophones will just stall out when you turn the speed down to 33 rpm so I got pretty lucky with this machine! Easiest thing to do would be to swap out the spring motor for an electric motor. However that takes away the charm. Some things seem to make the speed more consistent such as greasing the motor more often. I might be able to use a different kind of grease which might also help.

@@SuperiorSandbox Wow, that is pretty loud! I didn't realize it was windup. Definitely has charm to it. As cool as the original is, I wonder if someone makes a newer windup motor that perform better at slower speeds. How long does it play for when fully wound up? I'm sure it has some governor in it that limits the speed. Super cool.

@@AKSoapy29 I'm sure it's possible to make a modern version for modern records. That would be awesome. Fully wound is just enough to play a full side of an LP oddly enough!

A full car? No way in it's current form. There's only so much I can do with the funds and tools I have access to and I've been busy with college over the last 2 years which has limited my ability to improve it. The end goal is to power a small go-kart with it someday.

Definitely, it's very ominous hearing music play on something like this.

So the patent plate has the model and serial numbers on it. However there is really no known correlation between the serial number and the year of manufacture. However is it a Victor "M" model. The "M" name was phased out around 1905 so 1904 is really just a guess based on that. I'm not really an expert on phonographs but based on what I've read online it could have been built anywhere from 1903 - 1905.

@@SuperiorSandbox at least you didn’t assume the year on the patent plate was the year of manufacture. You see folks with machines from the 1920s thinking it was made in 1904 or 1906! 😂

It's a Victor MS "Monarch Special". Produced between 1902-1905.
